Delores “Dee” (Short) Campigotto, Born Nov 2, 1929 in Van Lear KY, passed away peacefully June 8th 2021 surrounded by her loving and devoted family, including her husband of 72 years, Jimmy and 2 of her sons Mike, John and daughter-in-law, Mary. Dee lived a long life absolutely overflowing with love and being loved. A mother to 3 boys, a grandmother to 4 grandchildren and a great grandmother to 7, Dee was the mom and grandmother everyone wanted in their life.
Small in stature, huge in personality and caring, Delores was never short on friends. From her times as a cheerleader at Van Lear High school, to her job as everyone’s favorite lunch lady at Beavercreek High school in Dayton Ohio, to her regular card-sharking at Riverwoods in Estero Florida, Dee was a friend to all no matter where she was or what she was doing.
There is no shortage of reasons why people were drawn to Dee. Her sharp sense of humor, her self-taught ability to recreate the most authentic spaghetti sauce that could fool even her husband’s 100% Italian family, her knack for always having a good time—be it at the bowling alley, on the shuffleboard court, on the golf course where she shot a hole-in-one and never let anyone forget it—if you were with Dee, it was always time well spent.
Her husband of more than 7 decades, Jimmy Campigotto, can attest to this; it was indeed a lifetime well spent. Dee met Jimmy after he returned to KY after WWII and the rest is history. A lot of history. Very high highs, and very low lows, they got through it all together.
Dee leaves behind a void that no one else could ever fill. And while her family is absolutely shattered with the loss of her, we are all so grateful to not only have known and loved her, but to have been able to hang on to her for 91 years of joy. To have known Dee is to love Dee, and now, it is to feel this immense loss. We should all consider ourselves lucky to have had her in our lives, shape our lives and bring so much love to our lives.
In her passing, Dee is reunited with her first born son Joseph and so many others that loved her so. She will be forever missed but live on through the daily actions of those she helped shape. Love you grandma.
The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Alzheimer’s Association, or to Hope Hospice of Fort Myers, FL.
A funeral mass is planned at Our Lady of Light Catholic Church in Estero, Florida, at 0900 am on Saturday, 19 June.
