

Elizabeth “Betty” (Hearl) Mars was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend during her wonderful 82 years of life. She passed away peacefully on October 12, 2023, with family by her side in Fort Myers, Florida.
Elizabeth was born March 17, 1941, in Chicago, Illinois to Arthur and Charlotte (Plowright) Hearl.
Early on, Elizabeth enjoyed board games with her sister and family road trips out West, singing songs the entire way. In high school, she was a cheerleader, a member of the acapella choir, and made homecoming court. She graduated from Leyden High School in 1959 where she met and married the love of her life, Elmer Curtis Mars. They were married for 63 years and had three children together; Robert Mars, Deanna (Preis) Mars, and Alan Mars.
Elizabeth worked many years for District 300, was an active member of the Country Chords Barbershop Group, and had fond memories of camping with her family and spending time at Back of the Moon Resort in Haugen, WI.
Curt and Betty moved to North Fort Myers in 1996 where she enjoyed bowling, playing cards, sewing, cooking, her loving community, singing with the Spirit of the Gulf, a Sweet Adeline’s Barbershop group, and visits from her family.
She will be remembered for her loving nature, delicious food, crafting skills, and her kindness that she showed to everyone she met.
Elizabeth is survived by her loving husband and childhood sweetheart, Curtis Mars; her sister, Barbara Koskiewicz (late Don Koskiewicz); three children and their spouses: Robert (Jeannine) Mars, Deanna (Gary) Preis, Alan (Susan) Mars; 7 grandchildren: Megan (Joe) Spath, Emily (Erik) Smith, Joseph Mars, Brian Mars, Kurtis Preis, Ashley Mars, Jason Mars and 4 great-grandchildren: Khyden Smith, Oaklee Smith, Charlotte Spath, and Lilyana Smith.
A memorial service will take place at Miller Funeral Home (504 W. Main Street, West Dundee, IL 60118) on Saturday, October 21, 2023 from 2:00-6:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
