It is with both sadness and a profound sense of gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Francis Loren Varnum Sr., who peacefully departed this world on May 25, 2026, at the age of 93. Son of Albert and Hattie Varnum on March 15, 1933, in the quaint town of Elkville, Illinois.
A proud graduate of Elkville High School, Class of 1951, Francis took the same determination and zest that would define his entire life. Shortly after, he answered the call of duty, serving with honor and dedication in the United States Navy from February 25, 1952, until February 8, 1956. His time in the Navy not only broadened his horizons but also instilled in him a deep sense of patriotism and camaraderie—a spirit he carried with him throughout his days.
In his personal life, Francis was married to his beloved wife, Alma Varnum, who preceded him in death. Together, they shared countless memories that will be cherished forever. He leaves behind a legacy of love in his surviving children: Frank Varnum, Brenda Smith, and Debra Fulmer, as well as his son-in-law Joe, and Step-son William Tomlinson and his wife Shirley, who shared family gatherings and cherished moments.
Francis was also a grandfather to twelve grandchildren and a great-grandfather to thirteen great-grandchildren. Known for his quick wit, Francis had a story for every occasion, and always had a joke to tell.
An avid fisherman, Francis found peace on the open waters. His gardens were a testament to his nurturing spirit, a place where he cultivated not only plants but an appreciation for the simple things in life.
To know Francis was to know a man who lived with intention and embraced every moment.
As we bid farewell to Francis Loren Varnum Sr., we remember not only the void left by his passing but the indelible mark he left on each of us. His legacy will continue to inspire and guide his family and friends in the years.
May he rest in peace, knowing he was deeply loved and will be forever remembered.
