Born on December 10, 1947, JP was a lifelong resident of Fort Myers. He attended Saint Francis Xavier Catholic School and graduated from Fort Myers High School before continuing his education at Edison Community College. From a young age, he worked alongside his parents, George and Ludmila Pottinger, at their family business, Pottinger’s Nursery. Inspired by that foundation, JP went on to build his own legacy through Pottinger’s Nursery and Landscaping, pouring his talent and heart into beautifying Southwest Florida and beyond. From the iconic royal palms lining McGregor Blvd. to projects stretching from Miramar to South Carolina and even St. Croix, his touch helped shape the tropical landscapes so many people cherish today.
JP served in the Army National Guard and was a devoted member of the Church of the Resurrection. He had a zest for life that was evident in everything he did. Whether racing swamp buggies or spending time with his grandchildren, JP embraced every moment with energy and joy.
He is deeply mourned by his children: Gerald Pottinger Jr. (Christine), Hon. Susan Pottinger Bedinghaus, and Samantha Cano (Daniel); his sister Milla Voellinger; and his cherished grandchildren: Gerald Pottinger III, Jacob Pottinger, Hunter Bedinghaus, Connor Bedinghaus, Taylor Bedinghaus, Lilyana Cano, and Seneca Cano. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Susan Pottinger; his parents; and his sister Theresa Sands.
A memorial mass will be held on Thursday, February 19 at 11:00 AM at the Church of the Resurrection in Fort Myers with a reception to follow immediately after at the Parish Hall. A celebration of life will be held at a future date.
JP’s warm spirit and generous heart left a lasting mark on everyone he met. Though he is no longer with us, the memory of his kindness and energy will continue to comfort and inspire those who knew him. JP made friends with ease and carried those friendships through every chapter of his life. He will be remembered for the high-powered drive, enthusiasm, and joy he brought to his work — and to every adventure he embraced.
