Helen "Peep" Mary Elizabeth Stevens

aka Helen Mary Elizabeth Stevens

was taken from us at the age of 73 on 7/1/21 from Gulf Coast Community Hospital after a long and courageous battle with lung cancer.

Peep found her name before she was born on 1/29/48, the first child of Charles and Eleanor Stevens. All of the achievements of this amazing woman were the product of determination education, and natural artistic talent.

Peep graduated high school from Friends Seminary in New York City (1965), graduated college from Skidmore in Saratoga, New York (1969, and finished her formal education at University of Miami School of Law (1982). She was admitted to the Florida Bar in November of 1982.,

After graduation from law school she represented the elderly, the poor, and the disenfranchised in a distinguished career at Florida Rural Legal Services. A noted accomplishment was her appearance before the Florida Supreme Court to establish entitlement to medical benefits by elderly nursing home residents.

When not a work, Peep was outdoors. She raced sailboats (Zip and Blue Jay classes) as a young girl and frequently beat the guys. She was a champion.

Peep loved children. She was a volunteer “mother” when her co-workers needed help. She took her beloved “Tom-Tom” (English Cocker Spaniel) to read aloud to children in schools and libraries. She taught herself to train German Shorthaired Pointers to field, show, and obedience champions. She rescued English Cocker Spaniels and trained them to be champions and tracking specialists.

Peep was predeceased by her father, Charles, and her mother, Eleanor. She is survived by her sister, Nancy Jones (Lee) of Chappaqua, New York, her brother, Hal Stevens (Ann) of Fort Myers, Florida, her sister, Sarah Meyer (Conrad) of Bronxville, New York, and nieces and nephews, Lee Jones, Jr., Sarah Jones, Nora Meyer, Charles Meyer, and Margaret Meyer, along with her special friends Barb and Jackie, who helped her so much in her final days.

She was taken from us in the darkest hour of the day under a waning gibbous moon on a falling tide. Order out of chaos.
