John Dexter Fordyce

John Dexter Fordyce was born June 13, 1931 in Clay County, IN. He was the 5th of 10 children born to Emma and Dewey Franklin. On August 20, 1950 he married the love of his life, Barbara Montgomery. John and Barbara had 3 sons together – Terry, Danny, & Ronnie.

In 1963, the Fordyce family moved from Indiana to Florida. All 3 boys later graduated from North Fort Myers High School.

John and Barbara spent much of their free time breeding and showing German Shepherds. They were very involved in the Ft. Myers German Shepherd Club and had a great love for their dogs. In the early 90’s John retired from Hertz Equipment Rental, where he had been a mechanic for over 10 years. Both Terry and Danny worked at Hertz as mechanics in the following years.

After retirement, John spent his time mowing the neighborhood lawns, working on old lawn mowers, and helping his son and grandsons with their trucking business. He also shared his grandsons’ love for truck pulls and for a time had his own pulling rig.

John was preceded in death by Barbara in 2006 after 56 years of marriage. During that time their family continued to grow. They currently have 3 sons, 4 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.

John was a jolly spirit who loved to laugh. His sense of humor and smile were contagious. He was the kind of guy that would give you the shirt off his back. Those who knew him, loved him and knew not to piss him off. He taught his family the value of hard work, loyalty, and honesty.

On September 9, 2015, John left this Earth to once again be united with his love, Barbara.

Family and friends are invited to visit at Hodges Funeral Home at Lee Memorial Park, 12777 State Rd 82, Ft. Myers, FL 33913 on Saturday Sept 12, 2015 at 1-2pm. The funeral service will follow at 2pm at the funeral home with interment in Lee Memorial Park Cemetery.
