John William Gilbert, 88, of Fort Myers, died Sunday, June 23, 2019 at Select Specialty Hospital in Fort Myers. He was born on March 26, 1931 in Black Hawk County (Waterloo), Iowa. His father, Arthur William Gilbert, and mother, Evelyn Geraldine (Seery) Gilbert both preceded him in death. His Wife of 51 years, Rosemary Amelia (Schilling) Gilbert also precedes him, having passed on January 29, 2015. John is survived by his two sons, Jon A. Gilbert and Mark A. Gilbert, both currently residing in Fort Myers. John served on active duty in the U.S. Naval Submarine Force for 20 years, specializing in Navigation Electronics. In 1957, he graduated from the University of Iowa, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Commerce with a major in Economics. After a military career in the U.S. Navy aboard Fleet Ballistic Missile Submarines, he entered the investment business and became a Registered Representative of the New York Stock Exchange in the employ of Janney Montgomery Scott, Inc. headquartered in Philadelphia, PA. During his tenure as a Vice President and Branch Office Manager at JMS, John completed an academic program to receive a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of New Haven in Connecticut. He also completed a program to receive the professional credential Certified Financial Planner (CFP). In 1989, John and his wife, Rosemary, moved from Connecticut to Fort Myers, Florida. He continued working in the investment business in the employ of A.G. Edwards, Inc. headquartered in St. Louis, MO in 1993, at age 62, John transitioned into full retirement until his passing this year. His cremated remains will repose in the same plot with his wife, Rosemary, in the Memorial Gardens at St. Columbkille Catholic Parish in Fort Myers. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 AM on Friday, July 12, 2019 at St. Columbkille Catholic Church.

Johnny was always so nice. My mom Mary Jean always called him Johnny. He was blessed with a living and kind wife. Even though there were 9 of us I think they made us all feel special when they visited.
