Kenneth George Newman was born on July 7, 1937, to Samuel and Lillian Newman in Brooklyn, NY. An avid athlete throughout his life, he graduated from Tilden High School and earned his degree from New York University. He also proudly served in the U.S. Army Reserves.
Kenneth spent the majority of his career as the national women’s sportswear buyer for Montgomery Ward before transitioning into commercial real estate. At age 70, he was recruited to play tennis for Mercer County Community College. Carrying a full course load, he earned a place on the Dean’s List and helped lead his team to the national tournament, where they finished second in the nation—defeating many 18-, 19-, and 20-year-olds along the way. Beyond his own play, Kenneth was a dedicated coach and mentor to many, as well as an active member of the Brooktree Swim Club, where he won numerous singles and doubles titles over the years.
He was a devoted member of Beth El Synagogue in East Windsor, NJ, until moving to Fort Myers, FL, in October 2025, where he joined Temple Judea and lived close to his daughter and son-in-law.
Above all, Kenneth was exceptionally proud of his family. He was married to the love of his life, June, for over 59 years. He is survived by his beloved wife, June; his daughter Karen (Lee) and son Robert (Paula); his greatest pride, his three grandchildren, Jacob, Lilly, and Sarah; and his brother Jerry (Joyce).
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, September 25, at Hodges Funeral Home, 12777 FL-82, Fort Myers, FL 33913.
The family will sit shiva at the home of Karen Newman and Lee Vann immediately following the service on Friday, as well as on Sunday morning. The family will also receive visitors at the home of Robert and Paula Newman at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Kenneth's memory may be made to USTA Florida (United States Tennis Association), Temple Judea in Fort Myers, FL, Beth El Synagogue in East Windsor, NJ, or a charity of your choice.
