Leon George Anderson, affectionately known as "Mr. LA" or "Mr. Andy," was born on August 23, 1936, in Ruxley District, St. Catherine, Jamaica, and went home to be with the Lord on September 5, 2026, in Lehigh Acres, Florida. Leon was the first of six children born to his mother, Cartegena Gidden, and her husband, Edley Service. He was raised by his maternal grandmother, Antonia Harrison.
Leon attended Bermaddy Primary School in Treadways, St. Catherine, and later attended trade school. He developed a talent for working with his hands and became proficient in both carpentry and masonry. He completed apprenticeships and found employment in these trades in Jamaica. He was also a skilled driver of buses and delivery vehicles.
His daughter, Georgia, was born in 1961. In 1965, Leon met and married his first wife, Rosetta.
In the early 1970s, they migrated to the United States with their son, Bruce, and Rosetta's daughter, Joan. Their marriage ended in divorce in the late 1970s.
After coming to the United States, Leon continued to build a life around the skills he had developed in Jamaica. He excelled in the construction industry and eventually started his own company, LA Construction. It was through his company that he earned the name "Mr. LA." He made a good living doing what he loved-home remodeling, renovation, and fixing just about anything that needed fixing. Leon truly was a jack of all trades. If something needed to be built, repaired, remodeled, or figured out, Leon was often the person to call.
In 1983, Leon met and married Dellis McBean in Queens, New York. They built a life together for many years. After Dellis retired from nursing, the couple moved to Florida in 2006 and settled in Lehigh Acres. There, he continued to do renovation projects as well as becoming an active member of First Baptist Church of Lehigh, where they faithfully participated in Sunday School and became part of the church and the local community. Mr. Andy loved to play his music and entertained many friends with his annual not-to-be-missed birthday celebrations.
He is survived by his daughter, Georgia; son, Bruce; stepdaughter, Joan Neil; brother,
Grennette; sisters, Dorrel and Michelle; grandson, Karega; and a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins in Jamaica, New York, and Florida. He is preceded in death by his wife, Dellis and siblings, Norma, Diedre, Marcel and Derrick.
Leon was "a man of many hats". Whenever anyone saw Leon coming, he was almost always wearing a hat. And not just any hat. He had a hat for the day, the occasion, and perhaps even the mood. Always.
Today, we tip our hats to Leon Anderson, "Mr. LA". May he rest in peace, and may his memory continue to live in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
