Margaret "Betty" Stoetzer Gray
August 2, 1924 – November 2, 2018
Margaret Stoetzer (Betty) Gray, of Fort Myers, Florida, died on November 2, 2018 at the age of 94. She is preceded in death by her parents, John J. B. and Helen Robinson Stoetzer, a grandson, James Haggerty, III and her sister Doris S. Smith. Her loving husband, Latham B. Gray, Jr., survives her. They just celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary on October 27.
Betty is survived by her brother, John (Nancy) J. B. Stoetzer, Jr. of Eagle, Colorado; her three children, Latham B. Gray, III of Westerville, Ohio, John (Nancy) S. Gray of Charleston, West Virginia, and Helen (James) V. Haggerty, Jr. of Lambertville, New Jersey; seven grandchildren, Megan, MacKenzie, David, Margaret, John, Melissa and Elizabeth: and two great grandchildren, Ryan and Parker.
She was born in Fairmont, West Virginia, and attended The Grier School in Pennsylvania; and Gunston Hall and Mount Vernon Seminary, both in Washington, D.C. She was graduated from Wooster College in 1948 and was employed by the Fairmont State Hospital in Fairmont. Betty dedicated many hours to her community and was a member of The Junior League in Fairmont.
In 1967, she and her family moved to Bethlehem Pennsylvania where she continued as an active volunteer in the Young Women's Christian Association, the Visiting Nurse Association and The Episcopal Cathedral Church of the Nativity. She continued her Junior League activity and was a Sustainer Emeritus. In 1983, she and her husband lived three months in Turkey where he was a consultant to the Turkish coal industry.
In 1984, she moved with her husband to Beckley, West Virginia and in 1987, they built their retirement home in The Forest in Fort Myers, Florida, She and her husband traveled extensively in their early retirement years. Betty was an active golfer all her life.
Betty will be greatly missed by her family and her friends.
Arrangements for her final care have been entrusted to Hodges-Kiser Funeral Home, 9231 Cypress Lake Drive, Fort Myers, where a memorial service will be held on Saturday November 17 at 11 am. Those who desire may send condolences or make memorial contributions in memory of Betty to the Alzheimer’s Association or to Hope Health Care Services, North Fort Myers, Fl. Arrangements for a Memorial Reception are not yet complete.
