
Mary Ann Kovaly Owen, 86, passed away peacefully on March 9, 2026 at Joanne's House, Hope Hospice in Bonita, Florida. Born in McKeesport, PA November 16, 1939, daughter of Andrew and Veronica Kovaly. She moved to Florida with her husband Jack Owen 20 years ago, after retiring from teaching. She taught for 30 years at Watkins Elementary school in Pataskala, Ohio, while also earning a Master Degree in Education from Xavier University, Cincinnati, Ohio. Prior to that, she taught at Mount St. Macrina High School in Uniontown PA. She spent ten years as a member of the Sisters of St. Basil, teaching at her high school Alma Mater.She Married Jack Owen in 2004, and they moved from Columbus, Ohio to Fort Myers, Florida to enjoy retirement. Jack passed away in 2011.
"Mare" was a member of St.JohnXXIII Catholic Church, where she was active in the Church Choir, the Church Thrift Shop, and helping the sacristan with altar linens. She was an avid wood carving enthusiast and photographer; she also played piano and accordion, and sang and directed choirs in Ohio and St. John's. (She also rode a motorcycle to her teaching job in Ohio, which greatly impressed her students! )
She is survived by her brother Andrew Kovaly (wife Kathleen) niece Beth Ann (Kovaly) Ross (Husband Adam), nephew Mark Kovaly (wife Canden) and great-niece Emma Ross.
Funeral Mass will be at St JohnXXIII Church on Monday, April 20, 2026 at 2:00pm. Interment will be in St. John's Memorial Garden. In lieu of flowers, make donations to Hope Hospice, Bonita Springs, Springwood Court Assisted Living (Kenwood Lane, Fort Myers, FL) or St John XXIII Church, or a charity of your choice.
