Penny Gail Ginger, 70, passed away Saturday, June 16, 2018 in Fort Myers, Florida after a lengthy illness. She was born in Huntington, West Virginia on December 22, 1947 to Prentiss and Edith Ginger. She was a member of the Huntington High School Class of 1965 and attended Marshall University. Soon after, she moved to Atlanta, Georgia where she lived until her move to Southwest Florida, in 2008.
Penny is survived by her children: Erin (Dan) Ulmen of Littleton, Colorado and Ryan Long of Marietta, Georgia; her grandchildren, Ava Ulmen and Matthew Ulmen; her sister, Pattie (Bobby) Necessary, of Naples, Florida and her brother, Prentiss “Hardrock” (Micki) Ginger of Flatwoods, Kentucky; her niece, Trisha Necessary; her nephews, Jeff (Jamie) Ginger and Rustin (Jessica) Necessary; her great niece, Brooklyn Necessary; and her great nephews, Ian, Silas, and Griffin Ginger and Wells Necessary. She was preceded in death by her brother, Chuck Ginger.
She had a love of beach music that was formed when she and her close high school friends spent summers during college working in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. It was at the Beach Club where she heard her favorite beach band, The Tams, for the first time. The Drifters, The Zodiacs, and Jerry Butler were also admired. The summers they spent at the beach, followed by their years together in Atlanta, and later, girls’ weekends in Hilton Head, formed relationships lasting over forty years.
Penny was a lifelong football fan. She enjoyed watching her favorite NFL teams each weekend, including the Denver Broncos, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Green Bay Packers, and she loved cheering on her two favorite college teams, the University of Georgia Bulldogs and the Marshall Thundering Herd, every time they played.
A good friend to many, Penny will be remembered for her beautiful, sunny smile and her infectious laugh. Being a proud grandmother, the love she had for Ava and Matthew was reflected in the stories and pictures she shared with her family and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date in Marietta, Georgia. Those wishing to honor Penny may make a donation in her name to the Amyloidosis Foundation.
Arrangements were handled by Hodges Funeral Home at Lee Memorial Park.
