

Richard was born on December 8, 1932, in Montclair, NJ, to the late Milo B. Hopkins and Helen (Fraser) Hopkins. He graduated from Montclair Academy, where he played baseball and basketball. He also graduated from the University of Wisconsin and served two years in the U.S. Army and stationed primarily in Germany. Richard resided in Madison, NJ, for 42 years, followed by 35 years of retirement life and golfing in Sanibel, FL, and Skytop, PA.
Professionally, Richard was the President of Excess and Treaty Management Corp. (ETMC), a reinsurance management company located in New York City. ETMC produced and underwrote reinsurance business assumed by ECRA, a pool of up to 100 companies located worldwide but primarily in the U.S. In 1982, Richard negotiated the successful sale of ETMC to the St. Paul Companies, which then became St. Paul Re. He remained President through 1986, dedicating a total of 30 years to the company. Following his retirement, Richard became a Certified Financial Planner, volunteering his time to assist many individuals seeking financial guidance.
Richard was an avid sportsman who enjoyed golfing, tennis, fishing, skiing, and walking his beloved dog, Benson. He was a golf member at Canoe Brook Country Club in Summit, NJ, The Dunes Golf and Tennis Club in Sanibel, FL, and Skytop Lodge in Skytop, PA. He proudly won the golf club championship at The Dunes in 2000 and at Skytop in 2008. Deeply committed to his faith, Richard was a member and former Elder of the New Providence Presbyterian Church in New Providence, NJ, and a member of the Sanibel Community Church in Sanibel, FL.
Richard was predeceased by his beloved wife of over 60 years, Nancy Claire (Rice) Hopkins. He is survived by his two devoted sons, Brian F. Hopkins and his wife Diane, and David B. Hopkins and his wife Cindy. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Katherine A. Campbell and her husband William Jr., Cynthia M. Hopkins, Matthew F. Hopkins, Krista Miller and her husband David, Melissa Totemeier and her husband Jared, and Brandon Dellcioppia; and Richard’s great-grandchildren, Lillian and Carter Campbell, Harper and Hadley Miller, and Ethan Totemeier.
A celebration of Richard’s life will be held at The Village Church, 15100 Shell Point Blvd, Fort Myers, FL, on May 28, 2026, from 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM. The entombment of his ashes will take place at the Sanibel Community Church at a later date.
