Richard Leo Lally

Dick was the loving husband of Patricia Lally, with whom he celebrated 59 years of marriage. Together, they built a life centered around family and the many friendships they made along the way.

Born in Quincy, Massachusetts, on May 16, 1941, Richard was the son of Leo and Mary Lally (Cullen). He spent 38 years as a teacher in the Boston Public Schools, teaching at William Barton Rogers Middle School in Hyde Park. Over nearly four decades in education, he touched the lives of generations of students and colleagues.

He was the proud father of Richard and his wife, Trish; Matthew and his wife, Michelle; and Deidre and her wife, Cat. He was a loving grandfather to Kate, Matthew, Emma, Brynn, Leo, Tessa, and Jack, and took great pride in his family.

Richard was the brother of Arthur Lally and his wife, Dorothy, and a beloved uncle to his many nieces and nephews.

He was also the brother-in-law of Richard Falla and his late wife, Jean, and Charles Falla.

Beyond his family and his career as an educator, running was one of Dick's great passions. He enjoyed a 30-year running career, competing in hundreds of road races as a longtime member of the Marshfield Road Runners. He qualified for and completed 15 consecutive Boston Marathons. His love of the sport extended well beyond his own competition. He was a longtime coach and track official, generously giving his time and experience to generations of athletes.

Upon retirement, Dick and Pat moved to sunny Southwest Florida where they enjoyed endless golf, tennis, walks, and sunset dinners. Life in Florida was also full of great times with grandchildren: beach trips, mini-golf, ice cream stops, and hunting for golf balls together.

He leaves behind a family deeply proud of the life he lived and grateful for the many years they shared with him. His legacy will live on through his wife of 59 years, his children and grandchildren, the countless students he taught, the athletes he coached, and the many friends and family members whose lives were made richer by knowing him.

The family kindly asks that flowers not be sent at this time. Details of a Celebration of Life to be held later this fall will be shared by the family.
