Robert Joseph Smuda

June 13, 1943 – June 4, 2026
Obituary of Robert Joseph Smuda
IN THE CARE OF

Hodges Funeral Home at Lee Memorial Park

Robert "Bob" Smuda (also known as RJ), 82, passed away peacefully at the Douglas T. Jacobson State Veterans Nursing Home in Port Charlotte, Florida.

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Bob was the son of the late Frank and Martha Smuda. He was raised in Philadelphia and graduated from Frankford High School. He later made his home in Laurel Springs, New Jersey, where he devoted himself to his family and built a successful career in banking and finance. Bob also proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army.

Bob was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Barbara Smuda (née Rulis), with whom he shared many happy years. Together, they enjoyed vacations in Ocean City, Maryland, where they created countless cherished memories.

He is survived by his loving children, Maria (Arnaldo) and Bob (Kim); his treasured grandchildren, Marina, Evah, Myla, and Antonio, who brought him immense pride and joy; his brother, Raymond Smuda (Gail); and many extended family members.

In his earlier years, Bob enjoyed horse racing, trips to Atlantic City, fishing, and crabbing, and he always loved a good gin martini. During the last five years of his life, he was a resident of the Douglas T. Jacobson State Veterans Nursing Home, where he was affectionately known by staff and fellow residents as "Bingo Bob." There, he made many friends who became like a second family to him.

Bob will be remembered for his dedication to his family, his strong work ethic, and the love he shared with those around him. He cherished spending time with family and friends, and his warmth, humor, and steady presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

His legacy lives on through his children, grandchildren, and the many lives he touched throughout his 82 years.

Services will be announced at a later date and will be held at St. John XXIII Catholic Church in Fort Myers, Florida. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association in memory of Robert Smuda.
