

Ruffus proudly served his country in the United States Army and later dedicated his life to the waters of Southwest Florida as a commercial fisherman. Known throughout the region for his hard work and deep knowledge of the local waters, he spent many years fishing primarily for mullet and made a living doing what he loved.
A true outdoorsman, Ruffus found great joy in hunting and sport fishing. Whether on the water or in the woods, he appreciated the simple pleasures of nature and the beauty of Florida’s outdoors. He was admired for his honesty, loyalty, strong work ethic, and unwavering devotion to his family.
Ruffus was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty Jean Smith; his daughter, Tina Smith; and his parents, Hilburn Smith and Fairy Etta Smith.
He is lovingly remembered by his children, Brenda Smith, Carmen Smith, and Michael Varner; his brother, Phillip Smith; his sister, Lucretia Castor; seven grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. His legacy of love, dedication, and integrity will continue to live on through the many lives he touched.
Ruffus will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend whose quiet strength and steadfast character left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
Funeral service details will be announced once arrangements have been finalized. Burial will take place at Alva Cemetery.
