12/4/47 – 10/30/23
Age 75
Thomas James “Tommy” Nicol, son of Walter J. Nicol and Natalie W. Nicol was born in Newark, NJ on. December 4, 1947. He was raised in Kearny, NJ and attended Kearny High School where he would meet the love of his life, Kathleen “Kathy” Bowen.
Tommy joined the Marines shortly after High School. When he returned, he and Kathy would wed on October 14, 1972. In October 1977 they were blessed with the first of their two beautiful children, Sean Christopher Nicol. And in January of 1981, Brianna Kathleen Nicol would complete their family. Tommy was extremely devoted to his family but especially loved fulfilling his role as “Poppy” to his four grandchildren, Christopher, Caitlyn, Connor, and Emerson.
Tommy was a member of the Freemasons, a Licensed Plumber and Mechanical contractor and worked as a Fireman at the Kearny Fire Department for 23 years. After his retirement from the fire department, he and Kathy moved to Ft. Myers, FL in 2004. It was there that he became an active member of the Ft. Myers YANA club.
In Tommy’s free time he found much joy skiing, golfing, boating, and playing cards with his family and friends but he was especially fond of fly fishing. He was also an avid reader and loved learning about computers. Which is why he could often be found proof-reading and helping Kathy type up her college term papers.
Tommy was preceded in death by his parents Walter and Natalie and his younger brother Jeffrey. His life will forever be cherished by his wife Kathleen, children, grandchildren, brother Peter Nicol of Berkley, CA, sister Natalie Jean and husband Terry Barrett of Asheville, NC, the entire Bowen family and many more loving cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. Farewell to a great husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. You will be missed beyond measure.
