Zubida was born on February 20, 1939, in Carapichaima, Trinidad & Tobago to Ali and Rhasulan Hosein where she was the second youngest of 8 children.
Although she was born a Muslim, after attending a revival at the age of 21 she accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior and dedicated her life to God. By living a righteous life as a witness for Christ, she was a catalyst for her family and future generations becoming Christians, a fact she was eternally proud of. Zubida was a strong woman of God with an inspiring and undeniable faith.
Zubida met the love of her life Glentis Hughes after praying to God for a righteous man with a truck! God answered her prayers and then some. They spent 16 years in matrimony before he was called home to help prepare a place for her.
From a young age she loved learning, reading, and teaching. While she excelled in a myriad of skills, she found her true calling in teaching. Zubida served as the Sunday School Superintendent at the Assembly of God Church in Fredericksted, St. Croix. She also became the nursery teacher at New Covenant Christian School, Bronx, New York and taught several generations.
As a child, her father Ali loved to hear her sing Indian songs. Zubida had a beautiful soprano singing voice. Her passion was singing for the Lord, and you could find her singing in her church choir or even just in her home or garden. She could whistle any tune like a bird and if you were blessed to stay a night at her home you would be awakened by her trademark whistling.
Zubida’s love language was Food. No one went hungry if she was around. Her kitchen was where she created her magic and blessed her family, friends, neighbors and even strangers. No one could turn down a plate of her home cooking. She was the Queen of her kitchen.
She LOVED her garden and had a God given talent for growing anything. She took care of her garden or "she yard” as she affectionately called it and would say her plants were like her children. God called her home while she was doing what she loved to do, attending to her flowers. She would always say when she went to heaven, she would ask God to “put her in charge of the flowers”.
Zubida never met anyone that wasn’t an instant friend. No matter where she went people knew her and called her friend. She was friendly and outgoing and would strike up a conversation anywhere. She was known as the Joker because she was so funny. She was never shy about talking to others about the love of God.
Her family was her pride and joy. She gave life to 7 children who all loved her dearly and would travel across states to be where she was. Zubida loved her brothers and sisters and they loved spending time with each other. Her 9 grandchildren kept her busy and she had so much fun spending time with her latest generation, her great grandchildren. She loved all of her nieces, nephews, and extended families, and could often be found talking on the phone with them.
Zubida had “hot feet” and loved to travel. From Christmases in Trinidad, to spending holidays and summers with family and friends. She was a frequent flyer!
Although God called Zubida home before we were ready, the world will never be the same without her sunny disposition and demonstration of righteous living. We will continue to honor Zubida by following her example of spreading Faith, Hope and the greatest of all, which is Love.
Zubida was preceded in death by her husband Glentis Hughes and son Glentis Hughes Jr. Her brothers Latiff, Talim aka Charlie and Sadeek, Her sisters Batan, Ishoon, Tyroon aka Chinky Mamie.
