He was an only child, grew up in Capac, MI, attended the Lutheran Church and graduated from Capac High School in1965. In school, he was active in the Camera Club, Ski Club and played the principal in the Junior Play. He was active in track and Varsity Football.
From graduation, Ed moved on to GM to begin his work career. Shortly thereafter, he enlisted in the Navy. He married his high school sweetheart
in the fall and they had a girl named Niki Renee the following summer.
While in the Navy, Ed became a highly decorated Navy Seal. Upon his discharge, he was offered a yearlong position in Europe with Jacques Cousteau. Also, our government offered him a yearlong undersea training position. I could not follow him for a year. At that time, I was tired of being alone and we decided to return to MI instead of accepting either position.
In 1975, Ed became a father to a son, Bryan Franklin. He loved his children deeply and even working long hours he found time to be a baseball coach to both his children's teams,
When Ed turned 50, he retired from GM. We sold our home and became full time RV'ers. We traveled with three other couples, the Colemans, the Hardens and the Heussners. We had the best times. Camping is a good place to make friends, and Ed had no problem starting up conversations. One night at a campfire there must have been 30 people just setting around, no one talking. Ed stood up grabbed the guy's hand next to him and introduced himself. Moving on around the firepit to each and every person, everyone was soon engaged and laughing.
In St. Augustine, FL in a campground, we met a couple named Champ and Joy Summers. Ed and Champ were like a couple of teenage crazies. They loved to golf, sit at campfires and sit in hot tubs even in lightning storms holding umbrellas. Champ was a retired professional baseball player and became one of Ed's best friends.
In 2004 we had just moved into our current home when Ed had a triple bypass. Things changed and Ed, slowed down a little at a time.
He passed quietly and peacefully in Hospice on September 5, 2025. He is survived by his wife, Sharon Schook of 59 years. Their daughter, Niki Driscoll, her son, Christopher Driscoll and his son Liam and daughter, Leila.
