Born in Negaunee, Michigan to John and Pearl Gustafson, Gloria lived in the Upper Peninsula until graduating from Negaunee High School in 1942. Gloria continued her education at Loyola of Chicago Nursing School, graduating in 1945.
While working as a nurse in Chicago, Gloria met Edward Holden at a Valentine’s Day dance. In August of 1949, she married Ed in Midland, Michigan, and together they embarked on a journey that spanned 53 years until Ed’s passing in 2003. Gloria and Ed had three children. She cherished her role as a mother and grandmother, and was an influential role model because of her integrity, and hard work.
After living in Michigan and Marine Base Camp Lejeune during their early years of marriage, Gloria and Ed moved to Fanwood, New Jersey. Gloria's professional journey led her to Muhlenberg Hospital, where she headed the nursing staff in the maternity ward, until her family's move to Mahwah, New Jersey, in 1965. There, she transitioned to real estate, working for Abbott and Bremmer. She loved sales, and was a top producer in Bergen County for many years.
In 1977, Gloria and Ed purchased property in Vero Beach, Florida. In 1986 they relocated to Vero as “snow birds,” spending the balance of the year at Peck Lake in the southern Adirondacks of New York. After a short time selling real estate again in Florida, Gloria chose to retire. She loved to travel, spend time with her family, play cards (particularly bridge), play word games, and watch tennis. She was a passionate follower of politics and she volunteered at Willowbrook Court.
Gloria will be remembered for her unwavering strength, quick wit and her love for all animals, especially dogs and birds. She leaves behind a legacy of love and compassion that inspired those fortunate enough to know her.
She is survived by her children, Gary Holden (Wendy), Tom Holden, (Freddie) and Cindy Gardner (Whit), seven grandchildren, Danielle, Sean, Derek, Phillip, Eliza, Greg and Jay, and a great-grandson, Arthur.
A celebration of Gloria's life will be held in the West Building at Indian River Estates on May 11, 2024 at 1pm. All are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Vero Beach Humane Society are appreciated.
