Commander Michael Leslie Frey, CEC, USN (Ret.), passed away on April 25, 2026, at the age of 82. A resident of Hutchinson Island, Florida, Mike lived a life marked by courage, service, devotion to family, and a passion for teaching.
Born in January 1944 in New York, Mike was the son of a career Coast Guardsman and spent his childhood traveling with his family between Coast Guard bases. These early experiences shaped his adaptable spirit and love of adventure. He later attended high school in Honolulu, Hawaii, where he honed the easygoing manner that became one of his trademarks.
Mike entered the United States Naval Academy in 1963 and graduated with the Class of 1967. Known for his relaxed demeanor and “island” vibe, he was a valued member of the 34th Company. In 1968, he married Patti Gladis, beginning a marriage that would span decades.
Commissioned as an Ensign in the United States Navy, Mike served with distinction during the Vietnam War. As Officer in Charge of a detachment charged with monitoring Viet Cong movements in the jungle, he courageously led his men in the defense of U.S. Army Special Forces at Ba Xaoi against a vastly superior enemy force. Volunteering for the most exposed position, he repeatedly moved through heavy enemy fire to direct his men and encourage morale. For his valor and sacrifice, he was awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart.
Following his combat service, Mike earned a master’s degree in civil engineering from Georgia Tech University and transferred to the Navy Civil Engineering Corps. He served with the Seabees, including a tour as commanding officer of the Seabee School in Pascagoula, Mississippi, and concluded his distinguished 20-year naval career as Public Works Officer at the Naval Weapons Station in Crane, Indiana.
After retiring to Florida, Mike continued serving others through education, teaching mathematics for several years at Indian River State College. He was admired by students and colleagues alike for his intelligence, patience, and gift for making complex subjects understandable.
Above all, Mike was a wonderful husband and father of three boys. He was preceded in death by his sons, Chris and Kevin. He is survived by his loving wife, Patti; his son, Jason and family; his sister, Linda Elliott and family; and many friends, former shipmates, and students whose lives he touched.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 7, 2026. Mike will be remembered for his bravery, wisdom, humor, and unwavering love for those closest to him.
