Born in Bedford, Indiana, Ray was the youngest of six children. Following high school graduation, he joined the Marine Reserves and then the Army, serving two years during the repatriation of Germany and an additional year when the Korean War began, though he was not in combat.
Following his military service, Ray moved to Lansing, Illinois and was employed as a heavy equipment operator for the Sinclair Oil Refinery in Whiting, Indiana. He was a self-taught artist and sign-painter, and when the refinery declared bankruptcy in the early seventies, Ray was able to expand his sign painting business.
Originally married to Myrtle Inman, they had three daughters. When their girls were grown, they moved to Port St. Lucie, Florida, following their eldest daughter, Tammie, who had relocated to West Palm Beach, Florida. Ray and Myrtle joined Morningside Friends Church shortly after arriving in Florida and became active participants, Ray as an Elder in the church, and Myrtle managing the Church’s Bookstore in Port St. Lucie. Ray was heavily involved in the Church’s Evangelism Explosion outreach program, going out into the community and spreading the word of God. After 53 years of marriage, Ray’s wife Myrtle passed away.
Ray subsequently met Peg Hughes through mutual friends. As older adults, they decided not to waste time in a long courtship, and so were married in September of 2005 at the start of a trip to Israel. They had 12 wonderful years together, sharing their lives and their families.
Arrangements under the direction of Aycock Funeral Home, Fort Pierce, FL.
