Dec. 1928 - October 2019
Mrs. Sue (Upshaw) Mitchell was born in Jacksonville, Florida just before the Great Depression, and experienced the home front of WWII as a student at Ketterlinus High School in St. Augustine. She attended Florida State University for one year before returning to St. Augustine and working as a secretary for the Florida National Guard headquarters.
Later, Mrs. Mitchell moved to Jacksonville, Florida where she became the manager for Kelly Services, and along the way met her husband Charlie Mitchell while working as his secretary at Vulcan Materials. She was a Dale Carnegie Training graduate.
Charlie and Sue married on Christmas Day, 1967. They were surprised by the birth of their son, Thomas Mitchell in 1970 and moved to Fort Pierce in 1973 when Charlie opened Mitchell Concrete Products.
They were married for 35 years. Charlie passed on in October 2002.
Mrs. Mitchell was known in Fort Pierce as a Realtor and as a teacher of arts and crafts, first for IRCC and then for the St Lucie Rock and Gem Club. She was a lifelong Republican and Weight Watchers member.
She was a gifted self-taught artisan who taught hundreds of people in the community for over 30 years, in everything from decoupage and ceramics, to macrame, shellcraft, flower arranging to Russian beaded flowers, glass fusion, stone cabbing, and wire wrapping. She had the ability to learn a new craft one week and be teaching it two weeks after picking it up.
Mrs. Mitchell passed peacefully at home on the morning of October 9th, attended by her longtime caregiver Deloris Spencer.
She is survived by her son, Thomas Mitchell, of Tampa.
A short graveside service will be held at 2 pm on Friday, Oct 25th, 2019, led by Rev. Janice Cary from Unity of Fort Pierce.
