As drum major, Barbara was crowned state champion twirler and led the Sheridan, Arkansas, high school band. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Henderson State College, where she was a standout swimmer and a member of the synchronized swimming team. She earned her master’s degree in mobility from the University of Arkansas and neared completion of her doctorate.
After graduating from college, she was first employed as a physical education teacher at the State School for the Blind, then became a mobility instructor with Lion’s World and eventually with Educational Services for the Visually Impaired, a federally funded agency. Barbara retired after 34 years of dedicated service. She loved her job and those she served, especially young people.
She and Davis met by chance and hit it off so well that both knew from the start that they were meant for each other. They married in May 1991, making their home in Fort Smith, where they were active in community and civic affairs and enjoyed the love and friendship of many friends. They were members of St John’s Episcopal Church, the Ft. Smith Scottish Club, the Regional Art Museum, the Democratic party, and other beneficent organizations.
Barbara is survived by her brother Dale Wilkinson, husband Davis, daughter Snow Hendryx, grandchildren Nicole and James Brunson, and great-grandchild Jayden Harmon. Through marriage, she joyfully assumed the role of stepmother to Davis’ two children and five grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on January 14th at 2:00 pm at St John’s Episcopal Church and a graveside service at Ruddick Cemetery in Garfield on January 16th at noon, both conducted by Father Jim McDonald.
Services are entrusted to Edwards Funeral Home.
