Betty Stanfield

October 11, 1926October 8, 2020

Betty Jo (Elmore) Stanfield (Nan), of Fort Smith passed away Thursday, October 9, 2020. She was born October 11, 1926 in Concordia, LA. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Edwin Watkins Stanfield. Betty was also a devoted sister, sister-in-law, aunt, mother, grandmother and friend.

Her chosen field of study was nursing. During her life not only was she a long time nurse, she later became an instructor of nursing at the Little Rock Vo-Tech from which she retired. One of Betty’s favorite loves were special needs children. She started a Sunday School Class for these children and followed them for the next ten years throughout Sunday school and Vacation Bible School.

Betty was a devoted member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Little Rock before moving to Fort Smith. She joined First United Methodist Church at that time where she became very involved with the Roundtable Sunday School Class, the Ruth Circle, and also enjoyed attending Sug Meek’s and Jan Taylor’s Bible Studies. She was a member of Chapter F, P.E.O.

Nan is survived by her daughter, Leanne Stanfield McClanahan and her husband David McClanahan. She is also survived by her three grandsons and their spouses, and one great grandchild, who were the Love of her life; Matt and Katie McClanahan, Ben McClanahan and fiancé Claudia Stuble, Alan and Katie McClanahan and her great grandchild, George Alan McClanahan. She was the “adoptive” grandmother to so many more; Richard, Andrew and Barrett Appleton, Lauren, Lesley and Jordan Murphy along with other grandson’s friends too numerous to name.

Leanne would like to thank “those” special caregivers from the staffs of both Brookdale and Methodist Village. Paula Bankston deserves a warm thanks for not only caring for Betty, but also loving her as a good friend.

Funeral service will be 10:00 am, Monday October 12, 2020 at First United Methodist Church in the Sanctuary. Interment will be at 3:30 pm at Pinecrest Memorial Park Cemetery in Alexander, AR. Arrangements are under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home.

Leanne, Sorry to hear of your mother’s death. We enjoyed getting to know her a little through Sarah Oslin and enjoyed her every time we could get together. We also considered her as Aunt Bet! Our prayers are with you and your family.

My precious Aunt Jo whom I was named after, loved my mother first and then me all my life in every situation. She encouraged me as a child and then an adult and I am thankful for every time we could see each other and share of ourselves. She will be missed and in my heart and thoughts always.
