Claudia Louise Scherrey, 80, of Fort Smith peacefully joined our Lord in heaven, Monday, October 12, 2020. Claudia was born September 21, 1940 in Shanghai, China to Claud and Ruth Robbins. She was affectionately known as Mom, Momma, and Granny and was preceded in death by her parents; and beloved husband Tony (September 18, 2019).

After graduating from St. Scholastica Academy in 1958, Claudia received her Bachelor of Science degree in Education from the University of Arkansas and married her high school sweetheart Anthony “Tony” Scherrey. She enjoyed teaching in Fort Smith and loved when her students would recognize her years later as “Mrs. Scherrey.” She was proud to have taught at Immaculate Conception Catholic School, before joining Ramsey Junior High to teach geography. She treasured those 32 years at Ramsey because of the lifelong friendships developed with so many of the teachers that carried through her retirement.

In her retirement years, Claudia enjoyed spending time with her cherished husband of 57 years until his death. She was a bright light of love to so many including her children, grandchildren, extended family, and many friends. “Granny” as she was affectionately known by most, never forgot a birthday or anniversary, had a funny sense of humor that showed through the thoughtfully handwritten cards and letters she would send to those she loved. Everyone she met was an instant friend, she enjoyed life to the fullest, and always put others before herself. She was strong in her Faith and was an active member of Christ the King Catholic Church where she enjoyed being a lector and member of the funeral choir.

She is survived by her four children, Ben and wife Mai of Bangkok, Thailand, Edd and husband Amos of Memphis, TN, Serena of Fort Smith, AR, and Mary Ruth and husband John of Southbury, CT. Her grandchildren include three granddaughters, Charlotte, Caroline, and Olivia; and six grandsons, Morgan, Preston, John Henry, Sammy, Danny, and Tony. She also loved Rattanasiri “Chompoo” Veerakul of Bangkok, Thailand as a daughter and as mother of three of her grandsons. She is also survived by her sister, Becky and husband David of Rock Island, OK, and her exceptionally loving and supportive extended Scherrey family.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 am Saturday, October 17, 2020 at Christ the King Catholic Church (masks and safe distancing between seats will be applied) with placement of her cremains to follow in the church Columbarium. For those unable to attend, the service will be available to view on Christ the Kings Facebook page at CTKCatholicParishFS.

Flowers can be sent to Christ the King Catholic church or if preferred, memorial contributions can be made to Christ the King Catholic Church as well.

Dear Scherrey Family,

We don't know you, and didn't know Claudia very well, but I know she was our mother's (Elizabeth Hensen Jansen) dear friend from St Scholastica until our mom's death in 2010. Although our mom moved from Arkansas in the early 60's, we visited often and would sometimes get a chance to say hello. When we heard of Claudia's passing, one of my sisters said "Well, now our mother has some company." I hope and pray they are looking down on us, catching up on all the details of each other's lives they might have missed through the years. Our sympathy is with you during this challenging time.

The Jansen family.

Most of us, in our lifetime, do a bit of grumbling, feeling sorry for ourselves, or criticisizing. But I can sincerely say that my friend Claudia did not. She was constantly reaching out to people,to say hello & inquire how they were doing. She would encourage & uplift, discuss her latest book she was reading, & share a view of life that was positive, yet took into account the struggles we must face. She was cheerful & funny all the time & left you feeling good about life. I will strive to be as sweet & thoughtful as her for whatever time God has left for me.

Always fun, funny, and joyful. She truly was someone who always had a kind word and lit up the room. During her time here on Earth, she touched so many people (including me). I cannot thank her enough for just being the amazing human being she was. Heaven has gained a beautiful angel who I have no doubt is already hard at work with Tony helping people as we speak!
