Gene was born on June 5, 1932, in Ardmore, Oklahoma, where he was raised. After graduating from high school, he honorably served his country in the United States Navy. He remained deeply proud of his military service and often shared stories that reflected the strong work ethic and leadership he carried throughout his life.
Following his service, Gene returned to Oklahoma and earned a degree in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Oklahoma, where he met the love of his life, Margaret. He went on to build several successful businesses, each a reflection of his integrity, determination, and belief in others. Gene had a gift for recognizing potential—many found their start because he opened a door, offered guidance, and gave them a chance.
Though he loved his work, Gene also made time for two of his favorite pursuits: sailing and scuba diving—activities that matched his and Margaret’s adventurous spirit.
Gene was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Margaret Sorrells; his daughters, Becky Ahlert (Tom), Autumn Glisson (James), and Bethany Soutello (Mitch); his sister, Cherry Rains; his brother- and sister-in-law, Eddie and Gerry Leonard; and his nephew, Eddie Leonard Jr. He held a special place in his heart for his son-in-law and caregiver, Tom Ahlert, and his niece, Dorothy Preston, whom he loved as his own.
He was a proud grandfather to Josh Keener, Tyler (Anna) Cutting, Nicholas Cutting, Chance (Rebecca) Praytor, Emmaline (Mitch) Ross, and Reiter Ahlert, and a great-grandfather to Frank Praytor, Truitt Praytor, and Claire Cutting. He was preceded in death by three of his children, Eugenia Praytor, Jeff Sorrells, and Bill Sorrells.
Gene will be remembered for his strength, generosity, and unwavering dedication to his family and friends. His legacy lives on in the lives he shaped, the opportunities he created, and in the hearts of all who knew him—in every year, and every half-year, of his remarkable 93½ years.
