E. J. McGuire, 89, of Barling, died March 23, 2011 in Fort Smith. He was a Professional Engineer and former owner of McGuire Shaft & Tunnel Operations. He was responsible for the Development of the fastest tunnel boring machine used in underground coal mining, and was Head of Underground Construction in North America for the Dravo Corp. out of Pittsburgh, PA. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Fort Smith and taught Sunday School at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II in the 44th Division, 324th Infantry and he was an avid Golf and Tennis player.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-eight years, Billie June Keck McGuire of the home; three sons, Earl James McGuire of Little Rock, Tim and his wife Kathleen of Fort Smith and Patrick and his wife Theresa also of Fort Smith; grandchildren, Aaron McGuire & wife Tiffany of Little Rock, Tessa & husband Justin Minor of Fort Smith, Brian McGuire, Staci McGuire, Allyson McGuire, and Kimberly McGuire all of Fayetteville and Timothy McGuire of Fort Smith, and one great grandchild, Aleah Nichole McGuire of Little Rock. He was preceded in death by a son, Brian McGuire.
Funeral service will be Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at 11:00 AM in the Edwards Funeral Home Chapel. Services and arrangements are under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Aaron, Brian, and Timothy McGuire, Justin Minor, Rick Jany, and John Clayton, Jr.
Honorary Pallbearers will be John Clayton, Sr. and Wendell Holland.
The family will greet friends Monday evening from 5-7 Pm at Edwards Funeral Home.
