October 9, 2021

One of my fondest memories from growing up was going to the lake and camping with my good friend, Karen, and her family. I’ll never forget the day Gloria and Jimmy taught me how to water ski, with Karen and Sharon adding their tips and demonstrating. After many tries, I was thrilled just to finally get up and actually ski for a few minutes! But when I fell, I forgot to turn loose of the ski rope immediately, so I got a little whipped by the rope and swallowed (what felt like) a gallon of lake water. When Jimmy circled the boat and hauled me out of the water, I was a little stunned from the experience, and surprised that Gloria was just belly-laughing at me, with that wonderful laugh of hers! Of course, it was infectious, and before long we were all laughing out loud. Life lessons of the day: When you fall while water skiing, turn loose of the rope AND learning to laugh at yourself is a good thing! Gloria had a wonderful sense of humor, a memorable laugh, and the ability to always find the bright side of any situation. She was a gem and she is laughing with the angels now.

In loving memory,
--Sherri Vervack
