Gwen Burton, 85, of Fort Smith, passed away on Thursday, July 2, 2026. Gwen was born on June 5,1941 in Texarkana, Texas, to James and Ruth Henard. It was there that she met her future husband, Jim Burton. Although life took them in different directions for a time, they reunited in 1968 and were married, sharing 58 wonderful years together.
In 1972, Gwen became an Avon District Manager. This opportunity brought her young family to Fort Smith, where they initially stayed with the Hassler family. After a month, they found a home, and Fort Smith became the place they proudly called home for the rest of their lives.
Gwen was actively involved in her community through organizations such as the Jaycees, the Newcomers Club, and many others. Through these groups, as well as within her neighborhood, she formed many lifelong friendships. She also enjoyed a distinguished career with Edwards Funeral Home, where she faithfully served for nearly 30 years. Gwen loved gardening, spending time with friends and family, she loved calling those hogs and was always on the go. She truly never met a stranger and had a remarkable gift for making everyone feel welcome. She will be remembered for her warm heart, generous spirit, and the lasting friendships she built throughout her life.
Gwen was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 58 years, Jim Burton, and her grandson, Bobby. She is survived by her son, John; her daughter, Michele; her grandchildren, Zachary, Phoenix, and Ariel; her granddaughter-in-law, Melanie Sengmanivong Burton, who lovingly cared for her during the final years of her life; and her cherished and only great-granddaughter, Emersyn Burton.
