Harlan N. “Bud” Bowen, 90, passed away December 16, 2011 in Fort Smith, AR. He was born September 12, 1921 in Oskaloosa, Iowa to Flavius Neil and Josephine Walling Bowen. He moved to Fort Smith with his family in 1940. He was a retired letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service and was a veteran of World War II, while serving with the Army Air Corp and the Korean Conflict where he served in the U.S. Air Force. He was a member and Deacon Emeritus at South Side Baptist Church, and was a 32 degree Mason, and a member of Amrita Grotto and the Scimitar Shrine. Known affectionately as the “Can Man”, he collected thousands of aluminum cans each year for the Muscular Dystrophy Association as a representative for the National Association of Letter Carriers.
Funeral service will be 10:00 AM Monday, December 19, 2011 at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel with Burial in Forest Park Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be: Ben Jordan, Charles Barnett, Dr. Tom Raymond, Marshall Sharpe, Jerry Laffoon, Randy Cates, Bill O’Hare, and Steve Markovich.
Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Allen, Dr. Art Martin, Paul Gean and Coss Hendricks.
Visitation will be Sunday, December 18, 2011, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Edwards Funeral Home.
Preceded in death by his wife, Dena Mankin Bowen, and brother, Charles Bowen, he is survived by one son; Thomas Neil Bowen and his wife Lele of Fort Smith, one sister, Rosemary Morcha of Kansas City, MO, one granddaughter, Connie Qianmei Jiang and many nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be sent to: South Side Baptist Church, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Arkansas Children’s Hospital, or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
