Herbert H. Couvillion, 82 of Fort Smith died November 29, 2014 in Fort Smith Mercy Hospice. He was a retired Colonel, United States Army and former Director of Operations of BDM Corporation in support of the Joint Readiness Training Center, Fort Chaffee, Arkansas and Fort Polk, Louisiana. Colonel Couvillion served in the US Army Special Forces for 15 years. He served in Vietnam, Laos, Korea and Europe during his 30 years of military service. His decorations include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster Bronze Star, Air Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal with 4 Clusters, Vietnam Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Master Parachute Badge, Aircraft Crewman Badge, and the Special Forces Tab. He was a member of the American Legion, Retired Officer Association & Association of the United States Army, Special Forces Association. He was a past President of the Fort Smith Noon Exchange Club, former Chairman of the Fort Chaffee Military Retiree Council and a former member of the First United Methodist Church Administrative Board. He received his BS Degree from McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana and was a graduate of the Army’s Command and General Staff College. He is survived by loving wife of 54 years Helen Couvillion and son Brett Couvillion of Moorestown, New Jersey. The funeral will be held at First United Methodist Church Roebuck Chapel, Thursday December 4th at 10:30 AM. Pallbearers will be US Army Military Honor Guard. Honorary Pallbearers will be his Tuesday Night Card buddies and his Ft. Smith Noon Exchange Club and special friend Mark Curlett. The body may be viewed on Wednesday evening at Edwards Funeral Home between 5:00 to 6:30 PM. Services are under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home.
