Manny I am so sorry to hear of the passing of your Dad Master Sergeant M.B. Redifer. If like my dad his military service meant a lot to him to be able to serve his country. Your Dad has now changed addresses and having a great reunion with those that have gone before him. My prayers are with you and your family. God bless your Dad and all of you who are mourning his passing.

I remember before I could reach the pedals on the big one ton truck sitting in dad's lap, 
hands on the steering wheel and thinking how cool it was to drive.
He taught me how to drive a tractor and brush hogging and disking was what I did even if one day I ran into the posts on the grapes and knocked down six or seven posts after I made too wide of a turn while disking.  I remember crawling down a hole with a rope tied to my foot to get a bunch of pups out of the ground that our german shepard had birthed and not being afraid because I knew my dad had a rope on my foot and nothing bad would happen. I remember being pulled on a sled behind the tractor in the winters and coming around a corner only to have to ditch the sled or I would have hit the cement gas pump....my brother Gary was pulled up in-between the fender of the tractor and the wheel because he didn't have enough sense to let go.  I remember the raccoon that I saved while picking potatoes and taking care of it until one day we found it on the road.  Dad took me out to get it while I road on the back of the brush hog crying and he made sure we had a special burial and marker for "Racky" I remember the trip we all took to New Orleans in the 60's and wondering why they had "for whites only" on the bathroom doors.  I remember how crushed my father was when he heard that his brother had died in a plane crash.  I remember many fond memories of my father and he taught me to work hard for the things that I wanted, respect those who had given their lives for our freedom and most of all he taught me to have integrity as a man.  Of course he called me a "gunky kid" well into my 30's but looking back I really did not have a brain in my head anyway.  I remember these last 10 years cleaning up the farm, getting rid of all the chickens, drinking and making wine in August, sitting around a campfire at night discussing everything you can imagine, waking up the next morning and having coffee with dad.  You made it a great run dad, I will miss you but I know I can live with all the memories that we made together and I thank you for that. I have thought many times what this day would be like and I remember a song by Dan Folgelberg and it goes like this:

"The leader of the band is tired and his eyes are growing old
But his blood runs through my instrument and his song is in my soul
My life has been a poor attempt to imitate the man
I'm just a living legacy to the leader of the band"
 
Look forward to honoring you at a full military send off.  My first one!!
