Philip Judson Bennett

December 12, 1956May 22, 2012

Philip Judson Bennett went to receive his Heavenly reward on Tuesday, May 22, 2012. He was a great inspiration to all who had the honor of knowing him. Philip handled his health problems with incredible dignity and faith, and even though he faced many hardships, he always seemed to have a smile on his face. He never said an unkind word about anyone. Philip’s favorite chapter in the Bible was Psalms One, and he greatly enjoyed reading and reciting Scripture. Above all, Philip’s faith and love for his family were the most important things in his life.

Philip graduated from Southside High School in 1975 and then attended the College of the Ozarks. He retired from the Maintenance Department at Whirlpool when his health would not allow him to work any longer. He and his wife, Alice, moved to Greenwood where they raised their two daughters. Philip was a member of First Baptist Church of Greenwood.

Philip was preceded in death by his mother, Doris Bennett. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Alice Bennett. He is also survived by his two daughters: Christa Bennett Neal and husband Jay Neal of Arkadelphia, AR, and Angela Bennett Poff and husband Franklin Poff of Tampa, FL. Philip is survived by his father, Dr. Bill Bennett of Wilmington, NC, and two brothers; Dr. Bill Bennett, Jr. and wife Cyndi of Dothan, AL, and brother David Bennett and wife Kathi of Wilmington, NC.

Philip leaves five nieces and three nephews. Laura and husband Dustin Dacus of Greenwood, AR; Lauren and husband Blake Nichols of Birmingham, AL; Lindsay Bennett of Dothan, AL; Steve McNabb and wife Sarah of Greenwood, AR; Palmer, Miranda, and JoAnna Bennett, all of Dothan, AL; and Aaron McNabb of Greenwood, AR.

Visitation with the family will be 5:00pm-7:00pm Friday at Edwards Funeral Home in Fort Smith.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00am on Saturday, May 26th, at First Baptist Church in Fort Smith under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home. Burial will follow directly at Evans Cemetery in Excelsior, AR.

Pallbearers will be: Dr. Bill Bennett, Jr., David Bennett, Jay Neal, Franklin Poff, Dustin Dacus, Greg Griffin, Doug Tucker, and James Moore.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Youth Department at First Baptist Greenwood.

I lovingly remember Philip and David and Bill as young boys going through First Baptist with me and my sister. I thank our Lord that He has Philip safely held in His hands and Philip is having a great day today. Praying that your hearts are warmed with sweet memories and great hope that Philip has only left his body here but his spirit is alive, well and worshiping Jesus as he comes into His presence. Having lost all of my children and 2 of my brothers I know too well how our pain feels down here but He is sufficient, even though there are times we think we cannot continue. I also, love Ps. 1 but will leave you with my favorite scripture, John 16:33 when Jesus, speaking of our human suffering leaves this word for us: "In the world you will have tribulation, but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world." Praying that God pours out his overcoming strength to each of you.
All our love in Christ,
Jeanie Ramey (Wilson) and family

Dear Angela, You have been on our minds and hearts. Although I never had the opportunity to meet your dad it's great to see that he was truly blessed with an incredibly loving family and a strong faith in the Lord. It's also clear that his life reflected the true message of Psalm 1. "That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither; whatever they do prospers. His light continues to shine in you and all the lives he has touched.

Philip was an inspiration to all of us. He was a bright ray of sunshine. My love and deep sympathy to all his family. "His eyes have seen the King in His beauty; they have beheld the Land that is very far off." (Isaiah 33:17)

While years and distance have come between us our love, thoughts, and prayers are with you ever so close as you traverse through these difficult moments. For Alice and the girls we pray comfort. For Bill and David you are now separated from a brother who was one of the most gentle souls we have ever known but the memories of such a good and great man will ever be etched into your hearts. For Phil's dad our beloved Dr.Bennett (can't bring myself to call him Bill out of deepest respect) I can't begin to know what it must be like to have to eulogize a son who proceeds you to heaven. We are sad we cannot be with you in Ft. Smith because of the distance but in our heart we are close beside you...I am sad that for too long MS took so much from Phil, his wife and children. But I am glad, too. I am glad Phil is well at last. I am glad he is with his mother, one of the truest saints I have ever known. And I am glad the venerable Dr. Bennett is leading the memorial service. No one can do this better than Bill Bennett, no one.Mostly I am glad and assured Phil is safe in the presence of Jesus whom he knew so well on this earth. It is fitting that the service is at our beloved FBC where Phil spent twenty years growing and loving Jesus. Feel our love long distance for all of you and to my long time pastor and mentor and forever friend. Eddie, Linda and Sarah Beth Graber. Parker Colorado.

Two words that ring through my mind when I remember Philip are mercy & grace...such a gentle man of God. Alice, our prayers are with you. You were truly God's angel sent to love Philip...such an example of a Proverbs 31 woman.

Our love to your daughters, our beloved Dr. Bennett, Bill, Jr. & David.

Angela, I am so sorry for your loss. I never got to meet your Dad but he was obviously a great man since he helped to raise such an incredible daughter. You and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers over the next few weeks as all of you struggle to adjust to life without him. We really miss you at the lab but are so thankful you were able to spend this time with your dad and family. With deepest sympathies to you and your beautiful mom.
