Steven Howard Huey, 66, of Fort Smith, passed away on Sunday, April 19, 2026. He was born on June 9, 1959, in Little Rock, AR to the late William E. Huey, Jr. and Flocine Coble Huey. Over the years Steve was a member of and/or attended City Heights Methodist, Faith Methodist, Goddard Methodist, Cornerstone Baptist in Roland, OK, and Rye Hill Baptist Church in Fort Smith.
He was brain damaged at birth, losing most of his hearing, but becoming a very special individual. He attended the Deaf School in Little Rock, then lived in Booneville and Russellville, AR after high school under Friendship Community Care. He took part in Special Olympics for many years, earning quite a number of first and second place medals in softball. In mid-2018 kidney failure brought him home again to Fort Smith, where he lived on his own with his caregiving crew until having to move to Ashton Place in Barling in early 2026. Anyone he met was considered a friend until they proved themselves otherwise, and that almost never happened.
He is survived by his sister, Marie Canaday and her husband Bob, of Fort Smith, along with a host of friends from all over the State of Arkansas.
The family is very grateful for his caregiving crew – Paula Domer, Trish Snider, Dan Taylor, and Jeanette Kynsi, who have all become like family -- for their care of him the last several years. The family is also very grateful for the staff at Ashton Place for taking him into their hearts and caring for him the last 9 weeks. He quite literally made himself at home among the staff and many of the residents there.
Visitation will be from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at Edwards Funeral Home. Funeral service will be 2:00 pm Friday, April 24, 2026, at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be at Forest Park Cemetery.
