

Terry Wayne Johnson , 48, of Barling AR, was born on February 3, 1965 to Gladys Blocker and Earnest Johnson in Poteau, OK. He graduated from Spiro High School in 1983. He joined the Sebastian County Sheriff’s Department in 1996 after successfully completing the Arkansas Law Enforcement Academy. He was united in marriage to his devoted wife, Carla in 2007. He departed this life March 2, 2013 while in the line of duty. Corporal Terry W. Johnson started with the Sebastian County Sheriff’s Office in July of 1996. He began his law enforcement career as a Detention Deputy. Corporal Johnson was certified by the Commission on Law Enforcement Training and Standards as a Detention Officer. Corporal Johnson rose through the ranks to the position of Shift Sergeant. He was promoted based on his exemplary work ethic and cooperative spirit. In 1999 Corporal Johnson was transferred to the Patrol Division where he found his calling. He was a graduate of the Arkansas Law Enforcement Training Academy in Camden, Arkansas. He was a part of the Search and Rescue/Operation Lifesaver team. He received and excelled in specialized training concerning interpersonal communications, storm spotting, and crime prevention. Corporal Johnson took training in Incident Command Systems through FEMA. He was trained in the proper responses to an active shooter. He was also a certified law enforcement instructor sharing his experience and knowledge with other law enforcement officers. He was also a member of the Sebastian County Sheriff’s Department Honor Unit. In January of 2012 Corporal Johnson was promoted to the rank of Patrol Corporal where he was the assistant supervisor of a patrol troop. Corporal Johnson will be greatly missed by his department. He was a good deputy who cared for other’s welfare. More importantly he was a great man. He lived our department motto: Honor and Integrity since 1851. All of the citizens of Sebastian County will mourn his passing. Funeral service will be 1:00 PM Saturday, March 9, 2013, at Community Bible Church, 9201 Dallas, Fort Smith, AR with burial at Oak Cemetery with Honors by local Law Enforcement . Arrangements are under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home. He was preceded in death by his brothers J. D. Johnson and Willis Ray Triplett. He leaves to mourn his loving wife, Carla, parents, Earnest Johnson and Gladys Blocker Eaves of Spiro, OK, sisters Gladys Phillips, Gloryana Triplett and Vernonlene Phillips all of Spiro, OK, a brother Gary Don Johnson of Spiro, OK, brothers-in-law James Brewer and wife Cynthia of Omaha, NE, Ron Brewer, Sr.(and wife Carolyn of Fayetteville, AR and Walter Brewer and wife Wilma of Oklahoma City, OK, sister-in-law Jeanetta Henry and husband Sam and a host of friends and relatives. He also leaves to mourn his brotherhood in Law Enforcement. Pallbearers will be Steve Cox and Charles Capps of the Sebastian County Sheriff’s Department, Darrell Miner of the Barling Police Department, Randy Toon of the Lavaca Police Department, Dennis Wisner of the Greenwood Police Department and Boyd Farmer of the Mansfield Police Department. The family will visit with friends Friday, March 8, 2013, from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM at Edwards Funeral Home.
