Vivian Irene McCormick Baxter, 95, of Sallisaw, Oklahoma, went home to be with the Lord on September 5, 2012. She was born November 3, 1916 in Xenia, IL to Ernest and Grace Hodge McCormick. Her school years were spent in Sac City, Iowa where she graduated high school, then married Bernard Baxter on September 13, 1934. She and Bernard farmed in Iowa for several years, and then moved to California, then back to Storm Lake and Newell, Iowa. Bernard and Vivian moved to Hawaii, and California once again, before settling in Sallisaw, where they lived until 1976. By then widowed, Vivian moved to South Dakota, living for many years in Gary, Clear Lake and Brookings before returning to Sallisaw. The joke used to be, she always had to see what was over the next hill but now she has climbed the last hill and sees eternity. She was an independent woman, traveling alone or sometimes with friends or grandchildren, all over the country. She was a wonderful seamstress, talented home decorator; and grew the most beautiful flowers. She also loved animals, especially her Shetland Sheepdogs, of which she had at least one for most of her adult life. She was a member of the Church of Latter Day Saints of Jesus Christ.
She is survived by her brother Bill McCormick of Hot Springs, AR; five grandchildren: Stephanie Nelson of Sallisaw, Oklahoma, David Baxter of Kingman, Arizona, Kim Baxter of Campbell River, British Columbia, Stephan Baxter of Storm Lake, Iowa and Jimmie Baxter, Jr. of Arizona; 10 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard, a son, Jimmie Baxter and sister, Laura Mae Schumann.
Memorial services will be at 2:00PM Monday, September 10, 2012 in Edwards Funeral Home chapel. Services and cremation are under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home.
