Afroditi N. Milosis Skembos , 90, passed away October 13, 2025, in Fort Wayne, IN. She was born on July 4, 1935 in the Village of Polikerasos, Kastoria, Greece, the daughter of the late Nikolaos and Fani Kyrou Milosis.
Afroditi immigrated from Greece to the United States in 1966 with her husband Nikolaos and daughter Marika, a year later their son Konstantin was born. Afroditi was a homemaker but through the years also worked at Benett, Weiland Furniture and Vera Bradley as a seamstress until retirement. After her husband of 25 years died in 1982 at the young age of 46, Afroditi carried on exemplifying strength and survival for her son and daughter. Afroditi loved to garden and grow her own vegetables. She was such a hard worker, never letting anything slow her down. One of her hobbies was sewing purses, pillows, potholders, and aprons for her granddaughters. She even created small chairs and couches for the dolls her granddaughters played with. Afroditi was most happy to be cooking for her family. She was known for making the very best Greek Pita and Pineapple Turnovers. Her famous words in the kitchen, “eat, eat” will always be remembered! Everything she cooked was made with the love of Yia Yia’s strong hands. As the grandchildren and great-grandchildren came along, she played an active role in their lives in every way possible, taking them to or attending their events. Afroditi loved her family more than anything in the world and would see to their needs before her own. She will be greatly missed but never, ever forgotten. Yia Yia was a woman of grace, dignity and selflessness beyond words. Her legacy lives on in each member of her family who truly loved her dearly.
She is survived by her daughter, Maria (Marika) (Dean) Short; her son, Konstantinos (Stella) Skembos; grandchildren, Gregory Short, Nikolina (Craig) Linnemeier, Dena Short (engaged to Austin Kordes) Kaleena (Bryan) Schreiner, Alexia Skembos (engaged to Hayden Heche) Sophia Skembos; great-grandchildren, Nikolas Wenglikowski, Savannah, Levi and Eleni Kordes, Anastasia Linnemeier; and her sisters, Vasiliki Rongos and Olymbia Siamos.
Afroditi was preceded in death by her loving husband, Nikolaos P. Skembos; and brothers, Kostas and Grigori Milosis.
