

Alfred "Al" Woods peacefully departed this world on Thursday, February 15, 2024 at 4:55am surrounded by his loving family. Born November 6, 1953 , he was the tenth child of Richard and Audrey (McNeal) Woods.
Alfred graduated from Snider High School in the class of 1973. Over his remarkable career, he dedicated over 30 years to the Fort Wayne Community Schools, where he served as head of the custodial department, primarily at Bunche Elementary. Later he worked at Metal Plate until an injury on July 30, 2004. Alfred faced adversity with admirable strength, never allowing it to hinder his zest for life.
Alfred was a devoted believer in Jesus Christ, whose favorite scripture, Psalm 46:1; beautifully captured his faith: "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." Alfred was a cherished member of New Zion Tabernacle, where his unwavering faith and spirit touched the hearts of many.
In July 2005 Alfred became a cherished member of the Turnstone Center for Children and Adults with disabilities, remaining a faithful participant for the next 19 years. In 2012, he found his soul mate, Tashia, whom he adored. They later united in marriage, creating a bond filled with love and companionship.
Alfred was a sociable individual, always ready to engage in a conversation, whether familiar with you or not. His interest included enjoying music, embracing the outdoors, meticulously caring for his van, attending family gatherings, and relishing moments with his beloved wife. The distinct sound of his laughter and his skillful maneuvering of his wheelchair will be dearly missed.
Alfred is survived by his wife and full-time caregiver, Tashia (Bowers) Woods; his children, Curtanius Williams-Woods and Gerris Kelsaw; bonus children, James, Jayahn and Jevaeh Johnson; 6 brothers, Lester (Diane), Donald (Ladonna), Gregory, Melvin, Michael (Patricia) and Carl (Gwen) Woods; 9 sisters, Essie Mae Underwood, Allie Glass, Mattie B. Irby, Maxine Smith, Susie (Barry) Nelson, Patricia (Oakley) Causey, Audrey (Frank) Mace, Marsha Woods and Cassandra Woods. Alfred also leaves behind his best friends, Robert Swain, Dennis Mims, George Berry and Earl "Easy" Barnes, as well as special caregivers, Shalanta Hood, Cynthia Thompson, Jessica Roberson and Morgan Keirness, in addition a host of extended family and friends.
Alfred was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Audrey Woods; his son, Alfred "Benny" Woods; and brother, Richard Woods, Jr,
His legacy of resilience, love and laughter will forever be cherished in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
A Celebration of Life Service is 11:00 am Saturday, February 24, 2024 at New Zion Tabernacle Church 1835 Spring St. (46808) with visitation two hours prior to services. Burial will follow in Concordia Gardens Cemetery.
