Barbara Jean Wattley, affectionately known as “Barb” to some and “Jeanie” to others, passed away on November 6, 2024, at the age of 85. Born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, on October 14, 1939, she was the cherished daughter of the late Martha and Lawrence Wattley.
Barbara centered her life on her family, especially those who called her Mom, Grandma, and Great-Granna. She created a loving home where she raised her sons and guided her grandchildren and great-grandchildren with boundless love, instilling in them a deep sense of family loyalty and a strong work ethic. Though she was often seen as quiet and reserved, her actions spoke volumes, reflecting her strength and devotion.
One of Barbara’s greatest gifts to her family was her handwritten letters, always penned on yellow legal pad paper. In these letters, she expressed her deepest love, wisdom, and guidance, sharing in life’s celebrations and offering comfort through struggles. Her words lifted loved ones in times of need and inspired strength. These cherished letters are a lasting part of her legacy.
Barbara’s humor and vivacious spirit brightened all who knew her. She had a gift for making people laugh, whether through her witty stories, jokes, or her famously funny greeting cards. Family reunions were unforgettable with Jeanie leading the family skits, taking the stage at Goodwill fashion shows, and lighting up the family’s "Gong Show." Known for her skill at the daily lottery—especially "pick 3" with her lucky number 917—she found joy in a good game of chance and loved outings to Las Vegas and local casinos. Road trips with her were as lively as the destination itself, filled with laughter and fun.
Barbara’s memory lives on through her family: her three sons: Pete, Darrell (wife Tracy), and Mark; six grandchildren: Takeya, Jamar (wife Bridget), Joshua, Jarrell, DeSheanda, and Devonte; and five great-grandchildren: Ashton, Jaden, Javion, Jaxson, and Dallas. She is also survived by her siblings: Lawrence Wattley and wife Everleina Wattley; Ruth Phillips, widow of Leslie Phillips; Jackie Phillips and husband Alford Phillips; Beverly Wattley; and Sharon Lindsey. Additionally, she leaves behind many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and family friends who were touched by her love, laughter, and loyalty.
She now joins her siblings who preceded her in death: Robert D. Wattley (wife Willie Mae); Eleanor Pearson (husband Lonnie Pearson); Gertrude Wattley; Theresa Lee (husband Tim Lee, Sr.); and sister-In-law, Ilar Wattley.
Alongside her family, Barbara shared special, long-lasting friendships with Louise Norton and Earlene Warren, bonds that enriched her life and were a source of joy and support.
Barbara’s legacy of love, laughter, wisdom, and unwavering support will live on through her family and friends. She will be deeply missed but fondly remembered.
