Barry was born in 1935 as the only child of Armond and Ruth Gemmer. He was a 1957 graduate of Indiana University where he was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. He went on to serve proudly in the United States Army. Barry loved coaching and enjoyed most sports; he was a passionate fan of IU athletics and the Chicago White Sox. While he had a successful career as a business administrator, he truly enjoyed his time at Saint Francis University where he served as Assistant Athletic Director, Baseball Coach and Assistant Basketball Coach. He was also proud to be a member of the Fort Wayne Human Relations Commission.
More than anything, Barry was known for the love he had for his family; it was evident in everything he did. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Barry is survived by his wife Nancy Gemmer, his children Karen Harper, Pete Gemmer (Tanya), Rebecca Thomas (Jason), Amanda Wilt (Trevor); 12 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren. He and Nancy recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
Barry’s life will be celebrated in a private service on Friday, December 15, 2023, at Trinity English Lutheran Church where he had been a member for more than 70 years.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Trinity English Lutheran Church, 450 W. Washington Blvd., Fort Wayne, 46802.
