Betsy Ueber

Betsy Ueber, 92, of Fort Wayne, Indiana, passed away peacefully following a long, courageous battle with dementia. She has now been reunited in heaven with her beloved husband, Stephen (Steve), her cherished daughter, Donna, and many other family members who went before her.

Born and raised in King’s Lynn, Norfolk, England, Betsy was one of thirteen children. She spent her childhood enjoying her idyllic surroundings with her siblings, often making her way into “Lynn” to frequent the library and local shops or paying a visit to “The Seven Sisters,” 7 historic trees that reminded her of her own beloved sisters. Her hometown was targeted often during World War II, but she always brought light to those around her, even leading her community in song as bombs fell above her. She savored the sun and went on weekend visits to the seaside town of Hunstanton, fondly called “Sunny Hunny,” to wander the beach and pick up fish and chips or an ice cream. Betsy’s life changed forever when she met an American airman named Steve Ueber at a dance at a nearby Air Force base. The two fell deeply in love and were married in her hometown of King’s Lynn. Shortly after, they moved across the Atlantic to build a life in Fort Wayne, Indiana where they welcomed six children together. Over the decades and immense distance, she remained ever close to her siblings and family members.

Betsy was a woman of immense energy and vibrant spirit. She was an avid walker and bike rider. She could always be found working in her yard and simply refused to sit still. Whether she was humming hymns as she went about the house, knitting endless blankets, hats, and scarves, or reading a book in the sun, she brought an unparalleled joy to everything she did. Her generosity could be seen in her smile, her conversation, and of course the heaping plates of food she served. Every friendly visit included an offer of whatever treats she could find in her pantry and fridge, though the leftover chicken may be hiding in a margarine container. She also had her own style: necklace, earrings, bracelets, color, and pattern. If you asked where she found her striking ensemble, there was a high likelihood she would mention a splendid coupon, thrift store find, or garage sale treasure. The twinkle in her eye brightened every conversation, and her quick wit and sharp sense of humor were softened by her sweet British accent. Her pure presence and active lifestyle were an inspiration to everyone who knew her.

Her faith was a cornerstone of her life. Betsy was a dedicated and active member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Fort Wayne for over 60 years, where she formed lifelong friendships and served her community with a generous heart. The depth of her faith could be seen as she walked through sun, rain, sleet, and snow to attend Mass or clean the church. Her church was truly her second home, especially after the struggles of moving to a foreign country at a young age. Most nights found her holding tightly to the beads of a well-worn Rosary as she fervently prayed. Her tenacity shone through as she doggedly carved out a full and happy life with God at the center.

Above all, Betsy was the proud matriarch of a large, loving family. Those who were lucky enough to call her family found their names preceded by such tender words as “lovely,” “precious,” and “darling.” She was so utterly wrapped up in love that she could frequently be found photographing them as they lifted a fork full of food. Every moment and every family member was worthy of her notice and kindness. Her legacy of love, strength, and resilience lives on through her five surviving children, Mark Ueber, Stephanie Ueber, Matt (Judi) Ueber, Jane (Jeff) Cole, and Tony (Kelly) Ueber. She was also the adored grandmother to 11 grandchildren and the proud great-grandmother to 21 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, Grace and William Wright; husband, Stephen Ueber; and devoted daughter Donna Dent.

Betsy’s life and faith will be commemorated at Saint Anne’s Home Chapel, 1900 Randallia Dr, Fort Wayne, Indiana 46805 on Saturday, August 29, 2026. A Funeral Mass will be held at 3:00 pm, with visitation one hour prior. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend Seminarian Fund or request a Mass in her honor. She will be deeply missed but forever remembered for her quick vivacity, her beautiful English roots, and her unwavering devotion to her family.
