Except for very occasional phone-calls or word-of from his sister, I lost track of him. I knew he had gone down to StGeorge’s MedSchool on Granada in theCaribbean. Then, I knew he had graduated & was in NYC at a really intense hospital. Then I lost all connection because this wife of mine …. she was a fem & she decided she was entitled .. To Change Her Mind! And so all of that came to an end. Eventually, I quit Colorado & moved back to Indiana to be my way-ancient parents care-giver & after yrs, my father hit a terrible spot & 9-1-1 was called to take him to the local country-hospital. And the treating ER-doctor was :::: BrettAHeiney !! It didn’t make sense to me – that he would be here in my little boondocks town. But it only took him about 10secs, & he knew my dad was at his end & to try & save his life, Brett arranged for helicopter-transport to a big-city clinic. But it was just my Dad’s time = 30hrs later he was gone. Immediately after the funeral, I was absorbed into a new job. My whole focus changed.
Many wks past before I took the time to return to the local-hospital to speak w/ & thank my old friend. But, …. he had moved on. Had changed jobs again. Gone to the Jasper hospital. Of-course, being medical personnel, my hospital would not give me ANY info about him. I sought to connect w/ him by emailing the Jasper-hospital more than once, but he never responded. That was in 2013, 014, 015, & finally in 016. Maybe the Jasper-hospital was also protecting him, or, maybe he just had other things on his mind. Maybe my ex-wife had given him a bum-steer about me. Now, I grieve for him. 


From out of the blue – it came to me to google Brett’s name. Something about what the computer returned told me to look for an obituary. Ominously & then suddenly sadly, it came up he was past!  I was astonished! The guy a doctor, so athletic, so rightly thin & of low body-fat & active – didn’t even make it to age seventy! He was always a person far more motivated & self-stimulated to achieve than I. He was amazing. 
I first met him as my wife’s former boyfriend. He was wiry & entertainingly sharp-tongued, but not mean. He laughed quickly & was humorously cynical on many topics. He & I hit it off. He spoke to a former boss & got me a job. As a serious student at IU, he was alittle different from our crowd he hung out w/.
Because his sister Toni was one of my wife’s best friends, Brett & I kept in touch. Was aware he went on to a hospital in inner-city Detroit after graduation, then when wife & I moved to Florida, he took a starving-artist vacation & rode his Honda350 bike >>non-stop<< from the city all the way to Florida to stay w/ us. When he arrived that PM, he was locked in muscle-memory & had to be helped to climb off, & couldn’t move his arms or hands from the cycle-riding position. Couldn’t hear us either after so many hrs of motor-noise. It was such a funny moment.
Then, wife & I moved to Colorado & he chose to take somekind-of internship at a clinic in FortLupton – I think – & for wks & wks he stayed w/ us. He & I took a hike up in the forests one day - & he completely bowled me over by reciting all of the muscles&tendons&bone-joints, blood-supply&nerve-structure of the human-shoulder, as we walked! He went on&on&on. I knew I was in the presents of diagnostic-&-treatment greatness.
