Obituary of Rev. Carl Hersch Satre
Rev. Carl Hersch Satre, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and mentor to many, was born May 6, 1934 in Lena, Illinois and died on July 3, 2024 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He was the son of the Rev. Dr. W. Carl Satre and Elizabeth Satre, who preceded him in death, along with a sister, Mary Catherine Satre Ensign. Carl attended Carthage College when it was still in Carthage, Illinois. There he studied biology, played trombone in the band, and met the girl with the beautiful voice (who was too short for him to see above the choir rail). On June 5, 1956, he married Joyce Seifert in her hometown of Harvel, Illinois. They were married for 68 years. Carl was a lifelong learner, earning degrees from several institutions of higher education. He received a B.A. from Carthage College; studied in Erlangen, Germany from 1957-1958; earned a B.A. from Hamma School of Theology in Springfield, OH; and was the first Protestant to earn a master’s degree in sacred theology from the University of Notre Dame. After many more years of study, Carl earned a degree in Pastor Leadership Development from Princeton Theological Seminary and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Wittenberg University. In his professional life, Carl served Grace Lutheran Church in Syracuse, Indiana, from 1959-1965. During that time, he was also a chaplain in the U.S. Army Reserve, 1st lt., Indiana Army National Guard. When the bishop called with a new assignment, Carl and Joyce moved to Fort Wayne, and Carl became the senior pastor of a growing church on the edge of town. Carl served Messiah Lutheran Church for 34 years, moving the building from 6201 to 7211 Stellhorn Road, accompanying people in times of joy and sorrow, and always leading with grace. As three-quarters Norwegian by background, Carl could be rather stoic about faith and life; yet, those who knew him well knew he had a lightheartedness about him, too. He loved fishing trips with Doc Laycock and Walt McComb (just to name a few), traveling the world, going out to eat, taking pictures, and yelling his daughter’s names loudly during band competitions. Carl is survived by his wife, Joyce; his daughters Caroline (Brad Davick) Satre and Mary (Noah Smith) Satre; and his granddaughters Audrey, Adaline, Arianna, and Elizabeth. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. A visitation will be held Wednesday, July 10, 2024, from 4 pm – 7 pm at D. O. McComb & Sons Funeral Homes – Maplewood Park, 4017 Maplecrest Road in Fort Wayne. The funeral will be at Messiah Lutheran Church (7211 Stellhorn Road) on Thursday, July 11, at 11 am, with visitation one hour prior. After a committal at Highland Park Cemetery, all are welcome to join the family for a luncheon at Messiah. For those unable to attend in person, the funeral will be livestreamed at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wv2bhjt9dIs. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Messiah Lutheran Church.
