David Allen Winship III

David Allen Winship III of Fort Wayne, Indiana passed away at his home September 21, 2026. Dave was born on October 10, 1950 in Berwyn, Illinois. He was the fourth of four children, born to Virginia (Hindman) and David Allen Winship, Jr. Dave is survived by his wife of 50 years, Carolyn Sue (Taylor), his daughter, Victoria (Winship) Fox, his granddaughter, Shelby Fox, and two great-granddaughters, Athena and Izabella. His siblings, Barbara Turner and Judy Moore, also survive him. He is preceded in death by his brother, James Winship, and his son, Michael Bryan Winship.

Dave was an avid reader and loved history. He had a bachelor’s in history and Russian Language from Indiana University. He had an MBA from Indiana Wesleyan University. He began working in telecommunications in 1978, starting at Indiana Telegraph and Telephone, later becoming Contel, GTE, then retiring from Verizon. He continued to work contract work for Frontier after retirement. He met his wife, Carolyn, in 1974 through mutual friends. They were married on October 11, 1975, while living in Chicago. They then moved to Hayden, Indiana and had their son, Michael, in 1978, and daughter, Victoria, in 1985. In 1992, he and his family relocated to Fort Wayne, Indiana for his employment.

He had a passion for American and World History, leading him to reenact historical Civil War battles with the 30th Indiana as well as the 44th Illinois. His interest extended into preservation of monuments and gravestones for soldiers of American wars. He had extensive work in genealogy research into his family members who served in wars. He loved photography and animals. He showed great compassion for animals. He doted on his cats, Aesis, Greystoke, and Wooly Worm. He provided care for his son, Michael, until Michael’s passing in 2015.

He had a unique eye for capturing details in nature, still printing photographs of his favorite finds until the week of his passing. He had dedicated multiple days a week to exercise for the last 26 years. Most days he spent time listening to the music he loved, feeding neighborhood birds and squirrels. Every home he lived in he planted many trees to help preserve nature.

Dave’s extensive knowledge and dry humor will be missed by all who knew him.

Visitation will be held at D.O. McComb & Sons Funeral Homes - Covington Knolls, 8325 Covington Road, Fort Wayne, IN 46804, US, on September 25, 2026, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

A graveside service will take place at Hayden Cemetery, 280 S County Rd 700 W, North Vernon, IN 47265, US, on September 28, 2026, from 2:00 pm to 2:30 pm.
