Donald Duane Arnold, 89, went to be with his Savior on Saturday, June 10, 2023. Born Dec. 20, 1933, in Fort Wayne, Ind., he was a son of Donald M. and Lena Arnold. Don was a lifelong resident of Fort Wayne.
He graduated from Leo High School. An earnest and avid learner, Don spent much of his free time taking things apart and learning how they worked. His love of learning brought him to Navistar where he worked as an automotive engineer for much of his life. Never someone to let his mind idle, after retirement Don continued to work as treasurer for the Society of Engineering Employees which became part of the UAW.
In 1955, Don married M. Ann McIlveen. Together they raised two children, Kerry and David, who Don was endlessly proud of. A kind and gentle man, Don was a member of Brookside Community Church. His faith in Christ provided him with comfort and strength throughout his life and in his final moments as he knew he soon would be with God. He was a generous and loving man who cared deeply about his family from his most immediate family to his most distant cousins. He collected hobbies and interests with fervor. He was not a man who did anything with half of his heart. If he was interested in something, he'd devour anything he could on the topic, whether it was little remote control toys, gardening, beekeeping, or sailing.
Don is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Ann; daughter, Kerry (Hal) Johnson of Fort Wayne; son, David (Renee) Arnold of Greenwood, Ind.; grandson, Adam (Natalie) Johnson; granddaughter, Hayley Johnson; great-grandchildren, Max and Lola Johnson; brother, Larry (Vicki) Arnold; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Dick (Lois) Arnold.
A memorial service will be at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 15, 2023, at Brookside Community Church, 6102 Evard Road, Fort Wayne IN 46835, with a memorial gathering beginning at 2 p.m. Burial has taken place at Eel River Cemetery in Churubusco, Indiana.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions should be made to The Gideons International.
