Born on January 30, 1938, in Laurium, Michigan, Don was the eldest of seven boys—a role that shaped him into the steadfast and thoughtful man his family and friends cherished throughout his life. Don spent 70 devoted years with his beloved wife, Jacqueline “Jackie” Taube, the love of his life and his partner in every adventure—from raising a family to riding Don’s motorcycle with him well into their golden years.
He is survived by Jackie; his two sons, Jeffry (Melissa) Taube of Greer, South Carolina, and Gerald (Joanie) Taube of Auburn, Indiana; four grandchildren, Erik (Christi) DeMarco, Daniel Taube, Robin (Dustin) Johnson, and Joe Taube; as well as six great-grandchildren who brought him endless joy.
A proud Purdue University graduate, Don earned his degree in mechanical engineering—a natural fit for his sharp mind and love of solving problems. His career as a machine and tool designer spanned decades, including many dedicated years at MRS, where he was respected for his skill, precision, and innovative thinking. He retired in 2010 but never lost his passion for learning or creating. Don’s intellect was one of his defining traits; he was a longtime Mensa member who relished puzzles of every kind, always eager for a challenge worthy of his brilliant mind. Yet he paired that brilliance with humility, warmth, and an easygoing charm that made him a joy to know. Whether sharing stories, tinkering with a project, or taking a long ride on his motorcycle with Jackie, Don lived with curiosity, humor, and a quiet confidence that inspired those around him.
His legacy lives on in the family he cherished, the work he took pride in, and the countless memories he created with those fortunate enough to know him. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
