Obituary of Doris C. Griffith
Doris C. Griffith peacefully passed away on November 19, 2020 at Saint Anne Home in Fort Wayne, Indiana. She was born Doris Anne Collins October 28, 1930 in Glasport, Pennsylvania to Margaretha and James R. Collins. The youngest of three children, Doris spent her childhood in Penn Yan NY. After graduating from Penn Yan High School, she received a scholarship and attended Geneseo College, Geneseo NY where she earned a degree in Elementary Education. Early in her teaching career she met her future husband Thomas Griffith on a blind date in Rochester, NY where Tom was completing his bachelor’s degree at the University of Rochester. They were married in 1954 then in 1959 returned to Tom’s hometown of Fort Wayne, IN where they raised three children. Doris was a devoted and loving wife and mother and continued to pursue her vocation by substitute teaching and teaching Spanish speaking Americans English as a volunteer in the Labach program. Doris tirelessly loved her family, friends and dogs. She remained close with her college roommates, enjoyed tennis and was and avid bird watcher. Later in life she took great pleasure in interior design and her home was beautifully decorated for every season and holiday. She and Tom loved spending time with family and friends, creating many memories at Lake Wawasee before Tom’s death in 2000. Doris knew no greater joy in life than finally realizing and spending time with her grandchildren. They are very lucky to have loved and been loved by their “Grammy D”. As a convert, Doris lived most of her adult life a devout Catholic. She and Tom were charter parishioners at St. Charles Borromeo in Fort Wayne, IN and were also parishioners a St. Martin De Porres in Syracuse, IN. Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas C; son, Lauren R; brother, Russell Collins; sister, Ellen Roe; brothers- and sisters-in-law, John, Virginia, Sister Mary Richard, Laurence, and Donald. She is survived by her children, Cynthia (Rick) Burke, Fort Wayne, IN, and Christopher (Heather) Griffith, Syracuse, IN; along with her grandchildren, Jack and Tori Burke, and Brandt and Bo Griffith; brother-in-law James B Griffith, along with many cherished God children, nieces and nephews. Her thoughtfulness and encouragement with be missed by all who knew her. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 19, 2020 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church (4910 Trier Road, Fort Wayne), with one hour calling prior. Burial will follow at the Catholic Cemetery (3500 Lake Avenue, Fort Wayne). Memorial donations in Doris' honor may be directed to SCAN and the Neighborhood Health Clinic. Arrangements by D.O.
