Gary Edward Carnes passed away on September 30th, 2021. He was born near Fort Wayne on November 5, 1935 to Oscar and Viola Carnes. He grew up on the family farm near Poe, Indiana, and was a 1953 graduate of Ossian High School. Gary met his future wife, Verl Ann Chaffin, while members of Poe United Methodist Church and were married on May 5, 1956. Gary went on to have a fulfilling career at Allied Mills. He also served in the Indiana Air National Guard for 33 years, retiring as a Senior Master Sargent.
Gary was a Master Gardener and taught classes through the Purdue Extension Master Gardener program. He was also a member of the First Wayne Street United Methodist Church.
Gary is survived by his wife, Ann and four children: Kathryn (Craig) Bennett, Greg (Michelle) Carnes, Brian (Vanessia) Carnes and Karen (John) Peck; his little sister, Inez Burch; 15 grandchildren; and 8 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial Service is 11 a.m. Saturday, October 30, 2021, at First Wayne Street United Methodist Church, 300 East Wayne Street, Fort Wayne. There will be a private family graveside service at a later date.
