HERBERT RAYMOND WEIER, 90, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Jan. 20, 2022. He was born on Oct. 13, 1931 in Cicero, IL. Herb was a Navy man, serving on a minesweeper in the 1950’s before heading to study engineering at Blackburn College where he met the love of his life, Lorraine Hofmann. Together for 65 years, they forged a loving life of philanthropy, community service and the mentoring of hundreds of young men and women. Having no children, and lots of time on their hands, Herb and Laurie volunteered at countless organizations including Center for Non-Violence, FW Museum of Art, First Presbyterian Theatre, Radio Reader Service, Northside Neighborhood Association, WBOI, to name only a few of their commitments. As a lover of the arts and a life-long learner, both Herb and Laurie supported all the arts in Fort Wayne, including creating an endowed scholarship for the arts at PFW. Their annual summer trip to Chautauqua Institute in NY as members of the Eleanor B. Daugherty Society brought special joy to both of them. Herb’s natural skills as an engineer might have started with his love of trains, resulting in his large collection of model trains set up every summer in their West Drive backyard for all the neighborhood kids to enjoy. As an engineer, Herb could fix anything, anywhere for anyone; as his friends from the Center for Non-Violence say, “he moved through some dark corners and musty cobwebs with his light, and screwdrivers in hand, to fix broken things, just as he fixed broken people with his welcome smile”. Herb was a humanist and dynamically curious, dedicating himself to the study of many spiritual avenues and was involved in the beginning of Wellspring, a non-profit organization created by several downtown church organizations and a devoted member of First Presbyterian Church. Retiring from Magnavox after 30 years, Herb spent the next 30 years dedicating himself to our community and to their many, many friends. On Monday nights Herb could usually be found sharing his tremendous sense of humor with The FIBS, the Fixed Income Beer Swillers. Herb treasured Laurie, friendship, philanthropy, the arts and the pursuit of service wherever he could find it. Herb is survived by his loving wife, Lorraine Weier of Fort Wayne. He was preceded in death by his parents; and only brother. Memorial donations may be directed to the Herbert and Lorraine Weier Scholarship at Purdue Fort Wayne, WBOI or First Presbyterian Theater. A celebration of his significant life will be held at 4pm on Saturday, April 9, 2022 at First Presbyterian Theater 300 W. Wayne Street Fort Wayne, Indiana 46802. Condolences can be left online at www.klaehnfahlmeltonfunerals.com.
